The Saint Petersburg State Chemical and Pharmaceutical University (SPCPU) is a modern training and education centre producing specialists to implement all stages of the medicinal products development and manufacturing cycle, a leader in training for the pharmaceutical and related industries (medical technology industry, functional food market, health-preserving practices).
The Rector of SPCPU is Professor Igor Narkevich, Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The University was founded in 1919 and has rich history. The University has developed its own scientific schools in various areas: from new medicinal products to medicine provision models.
Currently, over 4,000 students, post-graduates, residents, etc. are pursuing their studies at the University.
Today SPCPU includes:

● 28 departments
● 5 science and training centres (including those run in cooperation with Biocad biotechnology company and the Saint Petersburg Institute of Vaccines and Serums)
● Pharmaceutical Technical School
● GMP Training Centre
● Centre for Experimental Pharmacology (pharmacological research laboratory, routine biological procedures division, vivarium)
● Regulatory Relations and Good Laboratory Practices
● Additive Technology Laboratory
● Research Laboratory (medicine quality control centre)
● Medicinal Plants Nursery
The University has over 350 scientists and faculty members, most of them holding Candidate of Science or Doctor of Science degrees.
There are four faculties providing training in: pharmacy, chemistry, chemical technology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical management and economy, pharmaceutical technology, and merchandising.
SPCPU has ongoing programs for higher education, advanced professional training and secondary vocational training.
All in all, there are over 40 secondary vocational and higher education programs and over 70 advanced professional training programs focusing on priority areas for the development of pharmaceutics, med-tech, cosmetics, and related industries.
A number of education projects are being implemented in cooperation with the leading international companies.
The University graduates find employment in pharmacies, logistics companies, laboratories, production sectors and in management of pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetics and food companies and industries, as well as in scientific research organizations, government and state-owned agencies and institutions.
In 2012, the University became a member of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), and is now adopting best practices of leading higher education institutions from across the planet and introducing innovative solutions for professional training.
The University is consistently improving its positions in rankings of higher education institutions. According to Forbes, the SPCPU is among the TOP 100 Russian higher education institutions.
Comprehensive research by independent experts confirms the significance of SPCPU as a higher education institution that is successful in realizing the educational and scientific potential.
Training programs in areas such as “Pharmacy”, “Biotechnology” “Chemical technology”, and “Chemistry” have been recognized annually by the expert community as leading programs for many years and are listed among the Best Educational Programs of Innovative Russia.
The University is focusing on teaching students the competences that are in demand in the pharmaceutical industry so that they can rapidly integrate and adapt as team members working on advanced industry-specific and social tasks. To achieve that, soft skills development modules have been included in the main training programs for students to develop leadership and managerial qualities, critical thinking and openness to changes and innovations.
The students enjoy internship and on-the-job training opportunities in leading Russian and international pharmaceutical companies.
The University works on theoretical, initiative-based and contract scientific research projects, and collaborative scientific development projects in partnership with scientific organizations. In cooperation with industry partners, the University uses its facilities to complete the full cycle of pharmaceutical development of medicinal and functional food products.
The main scientific research areas for SPCPU are:
● Processes for streamlined synthesis of active substances for subsequent pharmaceutical development;
● Morbid condition modelling and pharmacological assessment of natural and synthetic compounds;
● Modern analytical approaches to quality control of active pharmaceutical ingredients (AFI) of natural and synthetic origins, medicinal products, cosmetics, food supplements and functional food products;
● Process-based approaches to manufacturing medicinal specific action products, functional food products, cosmetics and food supplements, and modernization of the manufacturing of customized and small-batch pharmaceuticals. Personalized medicines ;
● Discovery and isolation of natural compounds as prospective drug candidates;
● Improving medicine provision in the public healthcare system;
● Modern biotechnology aspects in medicine and pharmacy.
SPCPU Youth Scientific Society (YSS) offers an auspicious environment for creative application of newly acquired knowledge and skills, development of professional competences, and consolidation of efforts of young scientists in tackling relevant tasks of the industry.
Support is provided to young scientist and process-related initiatives, alongside with the methodological and information assistance to the young scientists.
The University’s specialized professional laboratory base enables a competitive training process in the contemporary labour market environment.
Undergraduates, graduates and post-graduates of the University are involved in scientific research activities, with some of the projects supported by federal grants.
The University organizes and hosts a number of activities related to its research and educational objectives: the ION Activist School, a series of training seminars and master-classes for student audiences; the Student’s Chemistry Olympics; and PHARMAHACK-2022, the project and education marathon event for graduate students.
For high school students, SPCPU hosts the Russian Pharmacist School - an annual interregional creative contest which includes intellectual competitions and professional orientation events that help find and develop creative abilities and interest in scientific activities in high school students.
High school students also get an opportunity to learn about professions in the pharmaceutical industry during theoretical and practical classes in their schools and with support provided by the federally funded initiative «Ticket to the Future».
University students are offered an opportunity to participate in various training events, master-classes, competitions and “Olympics”, sports events, festivals, etc.
Sports activities at the FARM Students Sports Club and involvement in cultural life are part of the lifestyle of our active student community
